The Red Sox lost a pair of pitching prospects in the Major League portion of the Rule 5 Draft on Wednesday, with left-hander Shane Drohan selected No. 4 overall by the Chicago White Sox and right-hander Ryan Fernandez going No. 6 to the St. Louis Cardinals.Drohan, 24, was Boston’s No. 19 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline. The left-hander got off to a fantastic start this past season in Double-A but struggled badly following his promotion to Triple-A. The Red Sox subsequently left him unprotected in the Rule 5 Draft and it was widely expected he might be taken by another team.Fernandez, 25, is another arm believed to be a candidate for Rule 5 selection. The hard throwing reliever boasts great stuff, including a fastball touching 99 mph, and he projects as someone who could realistically stick in a big league bullpen.By rule, players selected in the MLB phase of the Rule 5 Draft must stay on their new team’s active big league roster for the full season.
