NASA: Satellite data shows global mean sea level is rising at a faster rate

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:51:16 GMT

AUSTIN (KXAN) — New satellite data from NASA has found that the average global sea level rose by 0.11 inches from 2021 to 2022. That’s the equivalent of adding water from a million Olympic-size swimming pools to the ocean every day for a year. Satellite Record of Sea Level Rise, courtesy of NASAThe 2022 increase was actually less than what scientists expected the annual rate to be due to the mild La Niña we experienced. Years with a La Niña usually lead to weather pattern shifts that bring more rainfall over land instead of the ocean. During years with an especially strong La Niña climate pattern, the rate of sea level rise can even temporarily decrease, according to NASA.Sea Surface Height Change, courtesy of NASAWith 30 years of observational data to analyze, researchers have found that the rate of sea level rise is increasing. Since the first satellite mission that began in 1993, the global sea level has increased by 3.6 inches. Back in 1993, scientists predicted the sea level to...

Justin Sutherland’s Big E egg sandwich spot to move into Grand Pizzeria space

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:51:16 GMT

We now know what will take the place of Grand Pizzeria, next to Grand Ole Creamery on Grand Avenue.Chef Justin Sutherland’s egg sandwich shop, Big E, is set to open April 24. The first location of the shop is in Portland, Ore., but the intention was always to expand. Sutherland lives in St. Paul and his first restaurant, Handsome Hog, is located in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood.“The intention is to open next in Minneapolis, and then into surrounding suburbs, and infinity and beyond,” Sutherland said. The chef, who is doing well after a summer boating accident and multiple subsequent surgeries, said the restaurant will be open for all three daily meals.“It’s not a breakfast place,” Sutherland said. “We don’t want to be pigeonholed into breakfast. It’s a celebration of the egg, but not a breakfast place per se.”Sutherland is a travel junkie who jets around the globe for work and pleasure and the menu reflects that.Big E sandwiches have musical names — this one comes from a Flam...

Recipe: Cinnamon shortbread with chocolate hazelnut drizzle

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:51:16 GMT

This cookie recipe combines the satisfyingly crumbly texture of a classic shortbread with all three of my favorite gelato flavors — cinnamon, hazelnut and chocolate. Who says you can’t have it all? This cookie is the perfect pairing for that afternoon coffee or steamed chai latte. And the secret to the shortbread’s crunchy texture is — you’ll never guess — Cream of Wheat. The Cream of Wheat adds a lovely crunch to the dough, but you can substitute cornmeal or cornstarch for a similar crumbly texture. Not a fan of hazelnuts? Try toasted almonds or walnuts instead.Cinnamon Shortbread with Chocolate Hazelnut DrizzleMakes 12 to 14 cookiesINGREDIENTS2/3 cup whole hazelnuts1¾ cups flour½ cup Cream of Wheat (uncooked)½ cup granulated sugar½ teaspoon cinnamon1 cup butter, room temperature½ cup chopped semisweet chocolateSea saltDIRECTIONSHeat oven to 300 degrees. When the oven is hot, place the hazelnuts on a baking sheet and bake them for 5 to 8 minutes or until fragrant. Wrap up the hot haz...
